If you happen to be in Antananarivo (capital of Madagascar) these days, there’s one exposition you definitely need to visit: Pierrot Men’s photo gallery exposition at the Centre Culturel Albert Camus titled “Juste des images: Les photos en noir et blanc et en couleur de … Pierrot Men” (Pictures only: black and white as well as colour photos of Pierrot Men)
I personally consider Pierrot Men as one of the best photographer that Madagascar has. This exposition is a moving experience as it’s a mix of “personal-related” photos (I definitely was moved by his “autoportrait with his son” picture: the shadow of the photographer covering a grave ) and portraits/scenery as well as daily life. Some other “personal” photos are also showcased that taken during the “fiançailles” of his sister (experience that sounds familiar to us point-and-shoot photographers although you can always see the “eye of the artist”)
Although Pierrot Men, a photographer based in Fianarantsoa, usually shoots Madagascar-based scenes and portraits, some lovely photos has been taken in Kenya and Morocco (a coulourful sardine-container in Morocco is awesome- I can’t imagine being inspired to produce some work of art out of pilled containers of sardine). I definitely loved the unrealistic photo where two young mens are seen through a torn piece of raffia-based wall.
This mix of black and white as well as color photos from Pierrot Men is a pure visual (and emotional) moment that I definitely recommend you to appreciate. Moreover, the notes attached to each photos are astonishing for the visitors as you can reads notes similar to “sometimes I don’t understand photos that I make”, or “heureux accident (lucky accident where he admittedly reckon that the camera was not well set before shooting- but the result is amazing: roofs of Fianarantsoa’s houses are coloured in pastel blue)”. Pieces of art. Don’t miss it, deadline is May 16th 2009.
As I know you’re only visualizing what I’m referring to, check some of his previous black and white photos here to get a preview of some of his well-known photos.

Dare to say he’s not an amazing photographer?
Do you like Pierrot Men’s work? There are other talented Malagasy photographers out there, who’s your favorite? Where can you find samples of their photos

Sure, it’s never too late (bought my bridge camera this monday, so this might be a sign
We went to his exhibition before joining the “Antananarivo miblaogy” last Saturday. He is really good. What impresses me is that he says his black and white photos are better but when I saw his coloured ones I was amazed. I liked the one captioned with “sometimes I don’t understand photos that I make”, check the colours in this pic, just faboulus like a real painting. Even the dirty water that flows in the gutter (is it a gutter or not?) looks beautiful lol.
I like photography but I don’t have good gears lol and I also visit DPS from time to time
Tahina’s last blog post..Antananarivo Miblaogy 5 – When I Met The Bloggers
this is a gutter, indeed. But there’s some beauty in the picture considering with the contrast of the wall and the dog that is no really “visible” although it’s almost in the middle of the picture …Would love to be such a good photographer
madafan’s last blog post..Saha forest camp … A good choice for this long week-end
@eclectiqueID I also have a bridge and am amazed by the results this camera can produce when I browse flickr for photos taken from the same model … I used to think that I need a SLR before in order to be able to get stunning photos but I was wrong
