March-April: rush for the pokanel fruit time

After some posts about beer and barbecue let’s get you into a more healthy food that you’ll enjoy in Madagascar which is pokanel. Due to the fact that it’s easily perishable, and that the season for eating it is very short (usually around march and april), appreciating it while you can grab 3 pieces for 1 USD (in Antananarivo’s market) is a pure gourmet’s moment.

Madagascar being a tropical island, you can enjoy a variety of fruits whether it is the lychees, advocados, kaki (this orange tomato-like fruit), mangos (I remember one non-malagasy friend of mine who don’t miss getting one kilogramme of fresh mangos that he eats alone) and obviously bananas that you can find all year long. This list is not exhaustive and you’ll probably discover other fruits while you’ll visit the country.

Malagasy people usually sell pokanel per piece rather than per kilogramme, unless you go to some o

ccidental-like stores. But one piece is usually enough for one person (unless you are like me who can take three pieces in a row … oops)

I personally love the creamy and refreshing sensation that I got from eating eat. Be careful however as to watch for some kernels hidden inside this white cream that you’d want to swallow directly.
